American Ashton Lambie became the first person to complete a four kilometer standing start in under four minutes on August 18th.

Lambie held the world record for a short time in 2019, but Italian world time trial champion Filipo Ganna has been the standard bearer for the four kilometer individual pursuit, setting the former world record of 4:01.934 in 2020.

Lambie broke Ganna’s record at the high-altitude velodrome in Aguascalientes, Mexico, with an official time of 3:59.930.

Ganna, who recently won olympic gold in the four kilometer team pursuit, told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he hopes to reclaim his individual pursuit world record at the 2021 UCI Track World Championships, which will be held in Roubaix, France between October 20-24.

“He’s lowered it by a lot, so it won’t be easy to beat. But I want to go for it, and as I’ve always said, I want to go for it at sea level too, so as not to have an asterisk next to my time.”

Ganna will ride in defense of his individual time trial world title this September at the UCI Road World Championships in Flanders before shifting his focus back to the track, and challenging Lambie’s new world record.
