Similar to how the Critérium du Dauphiné in June is often the final tune-up for the Tour de France in July, the Tour of the Alps  is well positioned ahead of the Giro d’Italia.

The recent list of honours includes Vincenzo Nibali, Thibaut Pinot, Geraint Thomas and Cadel Evans. 

The race gives us a good indicator of form, however, not everyone who wins this goes on to win the Giro d'Italia. In recent history, only Vincenzo Nibali did so in 2013.
