Stage 9 was an alpine stage and the first summit finish of this year's Tour. The race finished in Tignes, a town that the 2019 Tour de France was prevented from visiting on stage 19 due to mountain storms and landslides.

The weather wasn't much better in 2021 as riders battled rain and near-freezing temperatures across multiple mountain passes.
