Conditions Favor Colin Strickland, But The UNBOUND Startlists Are STACKED
Emporia, Kansas has been getting increasingly hotter and drier in the days leading up to UNBOUND Gravel, conditions which favor the defending champion from Texas, Colin Strickland. That said, the talent that the 2021 UNBOUND has drawn is immense. There are too many potential winners to count, but Michael and Jessica attempt to highlight the major contenders in the men's and women's 100 and 200 mile events. In the 100 mile race, look out for the TIBCO duo of Lauren Stephens and Emily Newsome, while Stephen Hyde and Ashton Lambie highlight the men's 100. Kaysee Armstrong and Rebecca Fahringer pose threats to the likes of Amity Rockwell and Alison Tetrick in the 200 women's field. The men's 200 field has gone to another level in 2021. Privateers like Strickland, Peter Stetina, and Ted King will go up against WorldTour pros like Matteo Jorgenson, Quinn Simmons and Kiel Reijnen. Meanwhile the contingent of retired WorldTour pros that are dipping their toes into gravel has swelled substantially. Look for Christian Meier, Laurens Ten Dam, Travis McCabe and Thomas Dekker to throw a wrench in the men's field.
Born To Race Gravel: Amity Rockwell Returns To UNBOUND Gravel With Ambition And Gratitude
Amity Rockwell has raced UNBOUND Gravel twice, and her two experiences could not have been more different. In 2018, Amity suffered a catastrophic mechanical, taking her out of contention. In 2019, Amity surprised everybody, including herself, by winning the 200-mile event. Amity returns in 2021, grateful for the support that her 2019 result garnered her, and with a refreshing approach towards gravel racing. At the end of the day, Amity genuinely loves long days on the bike and is never too busy to slow down and help a turtle cross the road.
Bike Check: Eddie Anderson Opts For Speed With His Canyon Grail
Eddie Anderson has returned from racing in Europe with Alpecin-Fenix to tackle the 2021 UNBOUND Gravel. His Canyon Grail is one of the least-burly setups we've seen in Emporia. Running 38 mm tires, a two-by Dura Ace crankset and spare latex tubes, Anderson is looking for speed in UNBOUND. Unlike Peter Stetina's Canyon Grizl, Anderson's bike is equipped with Canyon's double handlebar setup, while Stetina opted for aero bar extensions.

After 117 Miles, UNBOUND Riders Will Face Double Water Crossings On Old Stone Fort Road
Michael previews one of the challenging features in the second half of the 2021 UNBOUND Gravel, Old Stone Fort Road. The road is accentuated by two water crossings, the first of which is quite tricky. While both sections are "rideable", the steep transition into the creek bed of the first crossing can pose a risk of front tire flats and front wheel mishaps. Racers will have to assess the risk vs. reward of attempting to make it through the first crossing without dismounting.

Colin Strickland used Little Egypt Road to ride away from WorldTour pros with over 100 miles of racing left in 2019. Find out what the racers will face in one of the most remote areas of the Kansas Flint Hills in this course preview.
